Job losses in car plants
The BBC and the unions are making a big deal about how the car companies are making Western European redundancies, to transfer the metal bashing jobs East. This sucks if you loose the job, but is otherwise beneficial to everyone, as cheaper cars, better profits, more taxes etc
It is broadly true that the manufacturers are making Brits redundant ‘cos it’s easier to do so. What we must not do however, is introduce the employment “protection” legislation that they have on the continent, (along with the mass unemployment).
If it’s easy to shed jobs, it is equally easy to create them, and under current broadly Thatcherite legislation, we enjoy the best “big country” employment rates in Europe, (though not as good as the still more free market United States). Following the French or German model would protect what exists more or less and make it impossible to create anymore, thereby setting the stage for a long-term decline.
